Osteoporosis Screening and Treatment
Osteoporosis is a complex disease and not all of its causes are known. This condition is preventable if bone loss is detected early. Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If left untreated, it can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. These broken bones, also known as fractures, occur typically in the hip, spine, and wrist.
Any bone can be affected, but of special concern are fractures of the hip and spine. A hip fracture almost always requires hospitalization and major surgery. It can impair a person’s ability to walk unassisted and may cause prolonged or permanent disability or even death. Spinal fractures also have serious consequences, including loss of height, severe back pain, and deformity.
Dr. Fuller’s office uses a DXA bone densitometer that is the gold standard and the preferred choice for testing of the hip and spine. This procedure is simple and only takes 15-30 minutes. Our staff performs this painless procedure requiring no disrobing.
If your bone density is lower than normal, you can increase it and your strength. You can do things like exercising, lifting weights or using weight machines. You can also make sure to get enough calcium and vitamin D. Dr. Fuller may prescribe weekly or monthly oral medications. Some women need a twice a year injection called Prolia.
